WABCO has a long history of technology breakthroughs, beginning with George Westinghouse’s revolutionary invention, the air brake for trains in 1868. 1869 - Young US inventor George Westinghouse develops prototype of the world’s first railroad air brake. Prior to Westinghouse’s invention, the ability to stop a train in an emergency did not exist. Brakemen had to stop each car by hand following the locomotive engineer’s signal.

1950 - New air brake control stand developed for ships. Locomotive pneumatic throttle equipment improved. New air compressor models introduced for diesel locomotive engines.
