With the introduction of the Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) standards, the Indian automotive industry is moving towards global industry standards, with its focus on cleaner vehicles and stringent emission norms. The new BS6 standards are expected to reduce NOx emissions up to 70%, including hydrocarbon emissions and particulate matter. Following the introduction of the BS6 standards in April 2020, truck and bus OEMs are making several technical changes in diesel vehicles, such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) provision for fitting diesel particulate filters and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
SCR technology uses a catalytic system to break down dangerous NOx emissions produced by diesel engines, into nitrogen and water. The chemical reactions used in SCR systems require a constant feed of ammonia gas. In automotive applications SCR delivers ammonia using a Aqueous Urea Solution referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). DEF is injected into the diesel exhaust stream and the heat from the exhaust, the fluid and a catalyst converts the NOx into harmless gases.
DEF is a 32.5% solution of automotive grade pure urea in purified water. For the SCR unit to operate efficiently, the DEF must meet exceptional standards of purity. This standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), defines the required purity level of the diesel exhaust fluid that can be used in SCR-equipped commercial vehicles and relevant quality levels that are to be adhered to in order to meet the emissions control norms so as to protect the environment. DEF is used as a consumable in vehicles fitted with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after-treatment devices. A non- compliant solution could damage the SCR system and cause issues in its functioning.

How WABCO DEF Works
The SCR system injects WABCO DEF directly into the exhaust stream. When it enters the catalytic converter, it reacts with the NOx from the combusted diesel –producing non-hazardous, naturally occurring nitrogen and water. Due to its stringent quality standards, WABCO DEF is safe to use across all diesel engines with SCR.
Availability of WABCO Diesel Exhaust Fluid
WABCO DEF is currently available as a standard consumable across all WABCO India’s authorised service centers (ASC) and distributors. WABCO DEF is currently offered as retail packages ranging from refill packs of 10 litres to mega packs of 1000 litres. WABCO India also offers the option of setting up DEF dispensing stations which can be co-located at fleet outlets, service points or fuel stations. The consumption of DEF and refill requirements will vary depending on the vehicle, manufacturer, usage pattern and driving style and conditions.
